Is anxiety the boss?

When anxiety controls what your child will or won’t do, it may be time to consider professional help.

Anxiety is a normal feeling and part and parcel of a full and rich life. However, when anxious feelings start to limit your child’s day to day functioning it is time to seek assistance.

What is anxiety disorder in children?

An anxiety disorder is anxiety and worry that interferes with daily activities. There are different anxiety disorders that are common in children:

  • Separation Anxiety Disorder

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder

  • Specific Phobias

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Signs of anxiety in children include:

  • Avoidance of the situation or issue they are worried about

  • Sleeping difficulties

  • Wanting things to be perfect

  • Physical symptoms such as tummy aches or headaches

  • Constantly seeking reassurance.

Treatment is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), with a focus on teaching practical skills. The program we run has undergone continual scientific evaluation and development to incorporate the latest understanding of anxiety and its treatment.
